Recently, under the guidance of Professor Qi Ye, Director of our laboratory, laboratory members Li Keyi and Chen Wenjie invented a method for recognizing magnified license plate numbers based on holistic and character region detection. The invention was granted national patent authorization on October 28, 2025 (Patent No.: ZL 2024 1 1581587.X, Certificate No.: 8404107).
This invention discloses a method for recognizing magnified license plate numbers based on holistic and character region detection, comprising the following steps: constructing an improved DBNet-based holistic region detection model, an improved CRAFT-based character region detection model, and an improved SVTR-based text recognition model using a license plate magnification number training set and publicly available scene text datasets; detecting test data of magnified license plate numbers through the improved DBNet and CRAFT models to obtain both the holistic region of the magnified license plate number and all individual character text regions; integrating these results via a connectivity module to determine the precise positioning of the magnified license plate number as well as other text regions potentially belonging to the same text line; recognizing text content within the image using the improved SVTR model; and finally filtering, merging, and verifying the recognized text content through a predefined verification module to output the verified final license plate number. This invention achieves high-precision recognition of magnified license plate numbers.
